Tax Breaks for Emergency Responders
February 11, 2009

For tax years 2008 through 2010, Emergency Responders who work for the Police, Fire service, and Emergency medical services (among others) are eligible for unique tax breaks. If you are an emergency responder, your gross income does not include the following when provided by a state or local government:

  • Property or income tax rebates for providing services as a member of a qualified emergency response organization
  • Property or income tax reductions for providing services as a member of a qualified emergency response organization
  • Qualified payments less than $30/month for providing services as a member of a qualified emergency response organization

The excluded income from these three areas reduces any related tax or contribution deduction.
